These porters are amazing. Each one carries 35 lbs. A lot on their heads. They are the ones who work hard. Our job is easy. They are sweet. Work their asses off. Get little pay and tips for the back breaking efforts. If they are good at what they do and speak passable English they could move up to assistant guide and the best become guides. Sometimes, if they qualify, they become cooks. Still have to lug the kitchen stuff up.  (Yep, they are carrying those butane tanks up the mountain)

Our guide is Florence. He is about 27. Speaks well. Great personality and totally together. Turns out he’s the guide who brought Martina Naratilova off Kilimanjaro (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/news/story?id=5905384)  a few month ago when she got serious altitude sickness. I feel safe with him.
